Iraqi children hold up an Iraqi dinar.
Iraqi children hold up an Iraqi dinar that a U.S. Marine drew on after one of the children handed it to him April 17, 2003, on the outskirts of Al Kut, Iraq. Marines from Task Force Tarawa, currently operating in the Al Kut area, spent the day searching the city for hidden or abandoned weapons used by the Iraqi army. Everywhere the Marines went on this day, cheering children greeted them. With the regime of Saddam Hussein destroyed, U.S. military forces in Iraq are shifting their focus from combat to helping the Iraqi people take back their country. Task Force Tarawa is comprised of mostly of Marine Corps units from II Marine Expeditionary Force based in Camp Lejeune, N.C., but is controlled by I Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Pendleton, Calif., for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
