Crowd of Iraqi children follow a convoy of U.S. Marines
A crowd of Iraqi children follow a convoy of U.S. Marines and U.S. Special Forces from Task Force Tarawa driving through the outskirts of Al Kut, Iraq, on April 17, 2003, where they discovered three surface-to-air missile launchers hidden in an industrial warehouse, as well as countless anti-aircraft ammunition and mortar rounds strewn across a field where children play. The day prior the troops searched 10 schools and found weapons in two of them. Everywhere the Marines went on this day, cheering children greeted them. With the regime of Saddam Hussein destroyed, U.S. military forces in Iraq are shifting their focus from combat to helping the Iraqi people take back their country. Task Force Tarawa is comprised of mostly of Marine Corps units from II Marine Expeditionary Force based in Camp Lejeune, N.C., but is controlled by I Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Pendleton, Calif., for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
