Biloxi, Miss. (Sept. 7, 2005) - A team of U.S. Navy Sailors, along with the assistance of state and local marine and wildlife law enforcement officers, assess the food, water, and medical needs of families stranded by Hurricane Katrina's destruction to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Sailors are assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), currently conducting relief efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. The NavyÕs involvement in the Hurricane Katrina humanitarian assistance operations is led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Department of Defense.
